Having struggled with arm pump during the early part of the season Oliver opted to have the operation. This took place on Wednesday 20th July just ten days before the race at Thruxton. The progress since his operation has been very positive as Oliver headed the time sheets during free practice and first qualifying. He slipped slightly down the order during second qualifying and started from fifth place on the highly competitive grid.

When the lights went out Oliver got a good start and slotted into fifth place quickly progressing to third place. On lap three he got good drive through the back section of the course and took the lead!

As is the nature of the racing at Thruxton the riders jostle for position and slipstream one another so positions change frequently. Oliver dropped back a number of places and was lucky to avoid a two rider crash right in front of him through the chicane.

On lap six of the 14 lap race the SGR rider got severely beaten up and lost four places, that coupled with the recent arm pump operation it was difficult to fight back. However, not being one to give up easily he dug deep and caught back up to the leading pack. Oliver came over the line in sixth place, however due to a front running rider being disqualified he was promoted to fifth place overall and secured an 11 point haul.

Tom Oliver said: “I got a good start and got away with the leading pack which is essential round here. I got a good draft and ended up leading the race – it was a great feeling. Later in the race I got a bit duffed up but I fought back to sixth, I heard after the race that I moved up to fifth overall due to a disqualification, I feel for the rider involved. Now I’ve got the arm pump sorted and I’m recovering well from the operation I can get back to the gym and keep the momentum going. I’ve had a taste of leading the race in such a high quality field I want that feeling to continue. Our next round is at Brands Hatch and I usually go well there so we shall see what happens. I’m really happy with how this weekend went.”

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “We knew it would be a challenging weekend following the arm pump operation but to come back and lead the race was just amazing. I’ve got to say a big thank you to the BSB Medical team who helped us sort out the operation which was carried out at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Gateshead. Considering Thruxton is the furthest round for us as we live in Morphet, the support we have had has been immense. I can’t thank our supporters and sponsors enough. We also had a lot of coverage on the track side commentary and BSB Radio which we appreciate.Well done to Tom for another great race.”

The eighth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship takes place at Brands Hatch in Kent on 5th-7th August.
